As project manager of the branding team for the York/Sheridan Design Grad Show 2010, I was responsible for creative direction of the brand and enforcing the essence of the brand through to all applications including signage, web and print. I also created the custom typeface, Hudson, to carry the serious but friendly voice I wanted the brand to portray.

From the York/Sheridan Design Grad Show 2010 Branding Guidelines:

Written by Sara Cwynar

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

Basic visual elements are the starting point as they lay the visual foundation upon which any design can be created. Similarly, students start their education with a very basic, but foundational knowledge in design. ‘The shape of things to come’ is a statement that communicates the potential, possibilities, and anticipation of what can be created when these visual elements are explored.

THE PROCESS IS THE MEDIUM

The active investigation and exploration of the shapes—through repetition—creates patterns, indicating the development and growth of the students as designers. This process was often arduous and rigid at times, but it allowed us to expand our skills in the span of four years.

THE WHOLE IS THE SUM OF ITS PARTS

Different patterns are layered in order to create new patterns that could not exist otherwise. This layering process creates new shapes, new patterns, and, ultimately, new images. Likewise, students come together at the Grad Show, displaying a wide variety of work that cannot be found in other places.

Branding Team: Sara Cwynar, Kaitlyn Diduck, Anton Jeludkov, Sarah Paul & Berkeley Poole
Special thanks to: Marcelo Hong, Linna Xu & the entirety of the graduating class

With Anton Jeludkov and overseen by Paul Sych, I created the identity and exhibition for this years York/Sheridan Bachelor of Design Student Work Exhibition. Our theme this year is Formation so I wanted the typography to form in various ways to reflect the range of work exhibited. There are two different wordmarks, both built from geometry and designed to be visible from different distances so as the words become concentric circles, the starker geometric letters become the focus.

Also this year, our program bought a vinyl cutter and we used it to break out elements of the students designs out of the display cases and onto the walls.

All work is copyright of their respective owners.

I took Pictoplasma NYC, the first of the Pictoplasma conferences in North America, and focused on it’s ‘invasion’ of New York through character design. I thought of the different materials that make up a city and transformed them into little characters which can be used as graphic elements as well as stickers that can be put up around the city.

I’m generally very picky about the materials I wear and there’s no company I love more for textiles than CYC Design Corp. CYC does the textile manufacturing and garment production for quite a few companies (Supreme) as well as their in-house lines: wings&horns, Reigning Champ and Spruce (RIP). The fleece that they use is probably the thickest, heaviest I have ever seen. They regularly do the Arc Hoodies for Supreme which include an inner thermal layer as well and they could easily stand up to any standard winter coat in terms of warmth. Also, CYC Design Corp is based in Vancouver, British Columbia and has regular sample sales (any one want to hook up?).

The garments are always pre-shrunk and constructed with the same overlock stitching of classic sweatshirts and are amazingly durable. The oldest item I have by CYC is just over 3 years old and it feels the same as it did after the first wash, if not more comfortable. The other fabrics that they use for other pieces (scarves/jackets) are also impeccable and worth every penny.

After getting one or two CYC fleece items a year, I finally decided to pick up a tiger fleece blanket and I’m happy to say that it stands up to most of the wool blankets that I have, looks amazing and doesn’t leave lint everywhere.

CYC is just one of those companies that consistently puts out great products, has a good design sense, is actually worth the price (compared to a lot of high-end fashion brands) and caters to the Canadian climate.

Disclaimer: I am not paid or in any way involved with CYC Design Corp. I just love what they do.
